Hi teachers,
This is the context?
I gave him a card with my name on. Then I thought, That was no good. This man can’t read. But Merrick took the card and looked at it very carefully. Then he put it in his trousers pocket.

I'd like to be confirmed on this one please? Later on in the story Merrick reads, but can I assume that he can according to the context?
Could Merrick read despite the doctor's opinion? Yes, he could.

Thanks in advance.

Could you confirm or correct them? Could they be shorter or more natural?
a) According to the doctor, why wasn't a good idea to give Merrick a card?
Because Merrick can't read.
This one is wrong, isn't it? Because depite of what the doctor thought at the beginning, he can read.

b) Could Merrick read?
Yes, he could.

Thanks in advance.

From just this passage, it's not clear whether he could read or not.

From the context you've given, it's impossible to know for sure whether the man can read or not. He could have been pretending to read the card for all we know.

Incidentally, there is an error in the first sentence of the passage.

I gave him a card with my name on it.

Hi Clive,
Thank you for confirming it. That's what I thought too.
How about this one?
Was it true that Merrick couldn't read or it was just the doctor's assumption?

Hi Aspara Gus,
Thank you for it. Now I have a question, The book doesn't have the 'it'. Why is that?

I don't know. The writer might have forgotten to add it.

Thank you for your reply.

Hi,

How about this one?
Was it true that Merrick couldn't read or was it just the doctor's assumption?

Why do you think your student are in a position to know the truth about this? They aren't, based solely on this text.
