Well, okay, we know Evanston (named after our own Evan Kirshenbaum) isn't a true suburb.

Hey, I have a feeling that I know what you mean by a "true suburb", but I would be delighted if you'd go into detail about your personal hunches and inclinations on the subject.

I don't know how to define it, but I know it when I see it. Scarsdale is a suburb. White Plains is not a suburb. Greenwich (Conn.) is a suburb. Port Chester is not a suburb. Yonkers is not a suburb. Bronxville is a suburb.
Suburbs cannot be too citylike in their own right, without losing their status as true suburbs. Population density is key, and relative affluence may be important too.

sidewalk. It's in the city that you have the little ... it a "boulevard". I don't think it had a name.

I don't remember any name for such things in Brooklyn. I think I thought of them as a sort of separated part of the "lawn".

We called it the "parking" in Omaha, when I was in high school.
