Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead. To what extent do you agree with this statement?

It is thought that a government wastes money when it makes investments in arts and it should invest this money in providing public services. I completely agree with this statement because arts hardly generate any revenue for the government and providing basic facilities to people is crucial.

Those countries which spend a large amount of their budgets on providing entertainment to their people in the form of museums, movies and music, they hardly generate any revenue from these resources despite making large investments. This is because they do not increase the income of people who pay taxes. Indian government, for example, incurs annual expenditure of around 1 million pounds on maintenance of Taj Mahal, one of the seven wonders of the world, but it generates a revenue of just 50,000 pounds per annum. Thus, it is essential for countries not to give priorities to arts.

Another reason why I think a government should consider investments in public service more important than arts is that economies can only prosper if basic facilities; namely, education and health are provided to the people. Those nations which do not provide quality education and health services, their citizens most likely end up with low-paying jobs and businesses. Either their citizens would struggle in health or they would become illiterate. Bangladesh's economy, for instance, has been growing by more than 6% per annum since 2015. The reason is they are allocating more than 20% of its annual budget on educating children and medical facilities.

In conclusion, a government must prefer investments in public services than arts if it wants to make more money in the form of taxes.
