Good question. I don't think there's really a reason. These things just become traditional.

I saw it on TV.
I saw it on THE internet.
I heard it on THE radio.

That announcer has been on radio for fifty years!

When TV first came out, I sometimes heard, "I saw it on the TV."
I think that definite article "the" is used as stylistic device as Internet is an abstract noun plus according to rules it should be capitalized. But there is another problem if it an is abstract noun why we use on the Internet? none of the dictionaries provide explanations( pity(

as a computer guy, let me tell u. "internet" and "Internet" are two different things. The Internet is basically where World Wide Web locates. "internet" can be any inter-connected networks, e.g., several LANs connecting together can be an internet but definitely NOT the Internet.
the - because Internet is something unique. There is one Internet, like THE sun, THE moon
Anonymousthe - because Internet is something unique. There is one Internet, like THE sun, THE moon
The problem is that "President Obama" is also something unique, but we never say "The President Obama".

Likewise for:

Laura was born in the 1970. (The year 1970 is unique, but there's no "the".)
Jake traveled to the Chicago. (The city Chicago is unique, but there's no "the".)
Please turn to the page 214 of your book. (Page 214 is unique, but there's no "the".)

If anything, uniqueness is an argument for not using "the" because, among other things, "the" is used to add uniqueness to what is not already inherently unique.
