Hi. Could you please tell what verb I can use when writing a paraphrased version of a statement? Are "as the author notes" or "As the author puts it" good choices? Thank you.

as the author notes This sounds ok

as the author puts it This sounds like you are going to give an exact quote.

Comments

As the earlier comment notes, "As the author puts it" introduces an exact quote.

"As the author notes" suggests you agree with the author.

What about if you do not agree? Then "suggests" or "implies" might be useful. It puts some distance between you and the author ("implies" is more doubtful than "suggests" I think).

Other useful words that do not commit you to what the author says are "claims", "says", "believes" and, of course "puts it".

Words that show you believe the author include "confirms", "demonstrates", "shows".
