Recently, I read some news on the site of CNN/VOA/BBC in order to improve my english. I am trying to comprehend the news in simple English sentence to learn some skill of vocabulary usage. Also, I am insisting on writing some english article to improve my written english.

I have insisted on this way for 2 month, but I have no ideas about this way. is it the right way to improve my english?

could you give me some advices which you improve your english by?

It's just part of what you need to do.

Watch US/UK movies with the captions on, if you have movies which are NOT dubbed.

Start reading English-language fiction (novels, etc). Write the unknown words on the margins of the books (buy some with wide margins:-))

Hi

Cso.huang,

Learning a language and learning a language well are not the same thing. Many people can learn enough to get by and good enough to communicate with others. However, to be fluent and masterful is an entirely different level. I am speaking from my experience which may or may not apply to others, but I used the audio-visual approach extensively, meaning listening and watching English educational or informative programs. BBC produces a great variety of programs spanning from science, nature to history which are excellent tools for learning as well as improving speech patterns and usage. and writing reinforce the listening and viewing. Spoken English is the hardest at the beginning in my opinion because of the shyness and embarrassment factor. To get over this mental barrier, one has to ignore these feelings as if they never exist. Another important aspect is to train your mind to think in English as this will help you eliminate the translation process when you are writing. Often people of foreign origin compose their thought in their own native language and translate them into English as they write. As a result, the tone and structure often sound unnatural. I know, it’s easier said than done. But, it’s very possible. I wouldn’t t say it if it weren’t true!
Thank you very much! Goodman & Maricu Hancu

These advices you gave me are very useful and touch me in my heart.

As Gooman said, the hardest barriers to me are listening and spoken English. Now, I could not entirely understand the CNN/BBC news, just a few which I studied on the website before. The announcer is speaking so fast to me. So I change to listen the special english of VOA and I think I come back to listen after some improvements.

Regarding spoken English, because I have no enviroment to speak English, I could not exercise and just read the news on the website loudly to record in my laptop and compare with the voice from the site. The advice I think best is thinking in English. I have the same experience in learning Chinese. Now I am reading and touching a plenty of article and news in English everyday to force me thinking in English. I believe, there are so good friends like you, encouraging me, I can improve my english well!

Thank you again!

Hi Cso.huang,

Here are my thoughts. Some people are born with God-gifted potentials. Whatever they do, they seem to be sucessful at it. Then, there are those of us who have to work very hard to achieve just one single goal. Sounds unfair, doesn't it? That said, some poeple do have special talents or gift in certain areas like mathematics, arts, and language while completely inapt in other areas. Personally, I think I belong to the category of people who have to work very hard at anything in order to have a shot at sucess, because I know that is still better than not getting a shot at all. We are happy to offer you our encouragement but you need perseverance to keep studying and improving. Best wishes!
