Here's the first stanza of the Chistmas carol "Mary's Boy Child." Is the the tense of the verb sayin it properly used? Emotion: thinking

Long time ago in Bethlehem

So the Holy Bible say,

Mary's boy child Jesus Christ

Was born on Christmas Day.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Emotion: smile

I would use "says"
It's poetic licence. Say needs to rhyme with day. Long time ago is another example of such licence. It should be a long time ago. (Harry Belafonte's version is marvelous!)

Hi, CB.
I always thought that this was in the coloquial style spoken by the inhabitants of a particular Caribbean island whose name my brain will not presently cough up.

That is, normal conversation:

Is that true? (reply) So de Bible say.

I understand that Harry B. is an extremely intelligent and articulate guy, but isn't the song written in coloquial style?

Emotion: beer Emotion: beer One of these may break the name loose.

Cheers, - A.

Hi,

I believe Harry Belafonte's mother was Jamaican.

No dout about that. Anyway, say has to rhyme with day in the song. Harry Belafonte spent a few years in Jamaica in his youth. When I visited Jamaica in 1990, the locals told all tourists that Belafonte was born there but that isn't true. Harry Belafonte was born in Harlem, New York.
