Now I look at this again, "historic sight" may be more reasonable or likely than I originally thought. However, I think I would need more context to judge it properly. In any case, apart from the "sight"/"site" issue, the sentence is mostly OK, but I would change "lost" to "had lost". You could also consider changing "thinking" to "thinking about".
