which of the following two sentences is the correct one?

1. the lake has lost 670 square kilometers in total.

2. the lake has lost an area of 670 square kilometers in total.

i prefer the second one, yet the first one seems ok too.

Hi guys,

In everyday speech, I think I'd say something like The lake has gotten smaller by 670 square kilometers.

Best wishes, Clive
