# Is This Normal?

Would it be possible for anyone here to tell me that an air conditioner with how much BTU should be used for the one bedroom apartment?

Can you understand the above line? In particular, is the bold part a normal expression? If not, then how to rephrase it? Thanks.

Note: BTU is the Cooling Capacity of an air conditioner, namely he amount of heat that can be removed per hour, measured in BTUs (British Thermal Units).
Hi,

No, don't say it that way. Trying to retain your words as much as possible, I suggest -

Would it be possible for anyone here to tell me what BTU size/capacity/production is needed for an air conditioner for a one bedroom apartment?

Thanks a lot, Clive.

BTW,

1) what did you mean by retain your words as much as possible?

2) I always find that I get confused by when to use how much and when to use what. In our example, could you tell me why you used what BTU instead of how much BTU?

Best wishes, Osee

1) what did you mean by retain your words as much as possible? I meant that I would make your sentence correct, but try to make as few changes as possible to the words that you were using.

2) I always find that I get confused by when to use how much and when to use what. In our example, could you tell me why you used what BTU instead of how much BTU? You can say 'how many BTUs' because you can count BTUs. But you say 'What BTU size' because in that phrase you don't count size.

Best wishes, Clive
I see, Clive, thank you so much!

May I add to Clive's reply:the sentence is primarily asking about BTUs and the capacity of the air conditioner as measured in BTUs that would be sufficient to cool one bedroom. That's why the order of air conditioner, and BTUs, in the sentence was changed by Clive even though he tried to retain as much of your words and sentence structure as possible. Similar ways to say (formally) or wite it would be. With an air conditioner, what BTU capacity do I need for a one medium- sized bedroom? or (and this would be more idiomatic spoken English) I've been looking at your range of air conditioners. I like the Brand ABC models, but I don't know what size I need. What would be the minimum number of BTUs for a medium-sized bedroom?
