Hello. Is the sentence below written in acceptable English? I am not confortable with it. Thank you.

These journals were selected from those found in the X database based on their subject (Biology), language (Chinese), and scope (they publish both theoretical and applied research).

Here's my attempt. I'm assuming you don't really mean whole journals but journal titles. If my assumption is wrong you can easily change it back to "journals".

These journal titles were selected from the X database on the basis of subject (biology), language (Chinese), and scope (theoretical or applied research).

I'm not in love with it, either. "Based" comes too long after "selected". Don't be afraid to break things like this into two or more sentences: "These journals were found in the X database. They were selected for subject (biology), language (Chinese), and scope (they publish both theoretical and applied research)."

There is another possible problem. Databases don't normally publish journals. Perhaps you meant "X holds both …."
