Long before we can either speak or walk, we're bombarded with the dualities which comprise our "playpen," beginning with Yes-No, Light-Dark, Good-Bad, Right-Wrong & Truth-Deception. These core dualities are designed to instil the feeling of powerlessness into the newly arrived soul as it gets used to its new form and environment. Did you know that lab rats born in captivity never have a sense there exists any other reality for them? Other dualities present themselves to us while still in the newly arrived category; concepts like Male-Female, Love-Hate, Joy-Grief, and Dreams-Nightmares.

The author calls it duality because that's what it is. The special definition used in the physics of light need not apply to every duality.

It's likewise in the definition and in many examples of 'duality' in the Oxford Dictionary, https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/us/duality .

Duality: An instance of opposition or contrast between two concepts or two aspects of something; a dualism.

Examples:

The photographs capitalize on the dualities of light and dark, stillness and movement.
Carnival is symbolic of the national ethos because it plays to many of the dualities in Brazilian life: wealth and poverty, African and European, female and male.
Such a response might help to get us past that frozen, defensive moment of offence which casts everything in black and white, into moral dualities of good and evil, progressive and reactionary.
