What does 'issue a challenge' mean? Can you also rephrase the following sentence so I can get the meaning please?

One of the men issued the challenge: "I'll take on any two of you".

Thank you!

Hi,

What does 'issue a challenge' mean? Here, it means 'to invite to take part in a contest'.

Can you also rephrase the following sentence so I can get the meaning please?

One of the men issued the challenge: "I'll take on any two of you".

'To take on' here means 'to confront, to be willing to fight'. It can also be less violent, eg I'll take you on in an argument, I'll take you on at chess.

A group of 3 or more men were talking. One said to the others, 'I'm ready to fight two of you. I don't care which two it is'.

Best wishes, Clive

Thanks for the answer. I know what 'take on' means. I just wanted someone to rephrase the sentence so I was able to get the meaning of the phrase 'issue a challenge'. Nevertheless, thank you very much for the examples you gave. They are usefull as well.
