Hi

Collins English Usage says that the sentence "It was magic." is substandard English. Can I request your take on this?

Thanks,

Tom

Can you link to it? There should be a caveat.

If you mean to say that it was magical, then "it was magic" is wrong; the adjective is not used predicatively. If someone asks you whether the entertainment for the children's party was pony rides or magic, you can answer "It was magic".
