Hi

Can we use "it" with people--or when we know that "it" is referring to people? For example, can a father ask his son when he finishes a long coversation on the phone?

Who was it?

It was John.

Thanks,

Tom

Yes, Tom, the word "it" is completely natural in those sorts of sentences. You'll also hear it in other tenses -- the present tense, for example:

Anne: "Mary, the phone's for you."
Mary: "Who is it?"
Anne: "I think it's John."
