TOPIC: DECLINING STANDARD OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE

The substandardization of English is commonly experienced. This phenomenon is found in countries like China, Malaysia, Singapore, Pakistan and Hong Kong. The natives of these countries are not aware of the significance and vitality of English. Subsequently, the standard of English is getting enfeebled in these countries.

The declension of the standard of English is subjected to numerous reasons. In the first place, it is due to lack of interest of the people in learning this language. In other words, some people consider it unnecessary to learn English. Similarly, many people believe that they are capable enough to get command over this language. Secondly, the class pedagogy plays a vital role. To put it simply, the instructions provided by the teachers have a prominent position. However, in Government Schools the level of English taught by the teachers is not upto the mark. In contrast to it, the Private School teachers implement this language upto some extent. But, still English-based dialects, structured grammar and good vocabulary is not taught apropriately. Moreover may teachers underestimate the students. As a result of which a hinderence in the way of their skill development occurs and they lose confidence. To sum up, the academic sessions are misconducted. Thirdly, the parents should give time to solve the problems and queries concerning the studies of their children. Rather, they refrain from doing so. In addition to this, some of them do not even converse with their children in English. On the whole, the children do not get the environment where they can fluently communicate and converse in English. Fourthly, the opening of various institutes which claim to enable students to cope with English Language within a span of few months. Consequently, many students are motivated towards these institutes, despite of the fact that linguistic efficiency of a student increases if he learns from the beginning.

The remedies concerning the fall of standard of English should be the main aim in the present situation. It is a high time to make people ascertain of the significance and applications of this language. In addition to this, the teachers should make the subject of English attractive for the students. Besides this, they should encourage the students to speak in English. Furthermore, parents should give time to their children and provide them an English learning environment. Additionally, the real image of the language training institutes should be revealed. If these positive changes are made in the learning process of a student, then he can adequately realize the difference between standardized and non-standardized English language.

Being an international language, its necessity is felt in various educational institutes, multinational companies, banks, offices and many other sectors as well as organizations. In this case, it is essential to know this language of business and technology. In connection to which, it is beneficial and prolific to raise the standard of English language.

I would not go as far as to give you three out of twenty. You may need to give details about the required length of this essay, what course it is writtten for, the general attitude of the person who marked it, etc. For me, this piece of writing is very good but a bit too short to be called a proper essay. You seem to have covered some very important points about the present status and decline of English, but rather than going into further detail, you tend to jump to the next point almost immediately. The structure is very clear and systematic, but there are too many adverbs like 'in addition', 'similarly' and 'moreover', and sometimes your choice of vocabulary is a little over the top. Oh, should you not have included references as well? Well, to answer one last point, if this essay is for an advanced English course, I'd give you at least 15 out of 20, but if it is a course dealing with more technical aspects of English, it could be below the passmark, but again not as low as three!!!
What is your topic ? standard of english ? did you say standard of English now is bad according to your second paragraph ?

I think substandardization is a wrong word. I have never heard such a word before.

The declension of the standard of English is subjected to numerous reasons. I think this is not a good sentence to start with in sencond paragraph. If I werent wrong, you said about why the standard of English is declining. Then you give details to support it.

Then third paragraph you give solution to the problem.

The fourth paragraph it seemed me that we have to raise the standard of English because so many people use it.

Thank You really very much Gobsmacked for expressing your remarks. This is to inform you that, i am a student of First Year-Bachelor Of Electrical Engineering (B.E. Degree Programme for four years). I am dealing with 11 compulsory basic subjects and one of them is English. Many students think that it's irrelevant to have English as a compulsory subject in B.E. Degree Programme. But, I don't think so. This is to assure that this course is neither dealing with Advance English nor with Technical Aspects of English. It is as a fact, not categorized! Therefore it is Simple(Easy) English Course.

This was a 20 marks test which is according to the rules of the University taken before the final examinations. It is called "Sessional Test" and marks are counted with the 80 marks final exam (20+80).A/C to the question the strength of the essay is 300-400 words. Well, this essay is more than 300 words.

Moreover, you had asked about the general attitude of this person. He is my teacher, i respect him but his nature is contradictory. Emotion: sad. More than making grammar corrections, he goes for the opinions and views expressed in the essay . For God's Sake this isn't Political Science! i cannot understand what wrong fact i have stated and how am i going to pass his paper. There is again going to be a question of essay in the final paper. He also gave good marks to some students, i don't know on which basis. When i ask those lucky fellows they say we use simple English and no Hi Fi Vocab.Emotion: embarrassed i feel insulted!

Hi,

Do you mind if I ask you what country your university is in? I'm asking because different countries have different forms of English.

Hi Learner77

I wonder about your teacher's grading criteria as much as you do. So given the fact that the paper was for a general English course, a major aim should be to assess your grasp of English grammar, vocabulary, use of punctuation, and so on, rather than to see how capable you are of discussing the topic using specialised terminology and theories. Your English is exceptionally good. There is no doubt about that. Now if your teacher also expected you to have read widely or made impeccable arguments on the subject, I would call him/her a rather harsh grader. After all, you are not studying for a degree in linguistics or applied linguistics. Do you have any other idea why you received such a low mark? Is it normally like this when you write other essays for him/her? What are his/her other remarks?
Hi,

my University is located in Pakistan.
Hi,

I agree with the others that 3/20 seems like an unreasonably low mark for this.

I don't know what to advise for your next exam. I suppose you could try to write more simply. Sometimes we have to 'adjust our product to suit our customer'. Do you think that would help?

Anyway, you shouldn't lose confidence in yourself.

Good luck! Clive
