I've heard John Kerry pronounce the word "America" (a'm3:rik&) (& ... it correct or common to do that in American English?

It's certainly common. I've always supposed it (at least, the corresponding pronunciation of "American") to be the reason for the term "Merkin".

The reason the term 'Merkin' exists is that some people in this world have no class.

The technical (sort of) term in Argentina for Italianized Spanish was "cocoliche". They got a lot of immigrants from Italy at one point, mostly concentrated in the capital. Porteño intonations still sound pretty Italian . CDB
