These responses appear to be based on personal opinions, rather than knowledge. If it's any help I was taught (during business typing courses) to close a letter beginning 'Dear Sir' with 'Yours faithfully, if it was addressed to a named person then it closed 'Yours sincerely'. To go further back it apparently wasn't uncommon in some circles to close with 'I remain, sir, your faithful servant......', or other expressions of deep respect.
Nice thread. Adding to my favs. Thanks.
