The latter is a strong version of the former. Purgatives have a more powerful effect than laxatives.
Hi Shiva,
Anonymous I want to know the difference between laxative and purgative.
What anonymous person said is right. Let me put it in a simple way.

Laxatives are called aperients. These laxative drugs produce peristalsis (movement of the intestines) and promote evacuation of the bowel to relieve constipation. More powerful laxatives are called purgatives. Even more powerful purgatives are called cathartics.

Laxatives - Powerful

Purgatives - More powerful

Cathartics - Most powerful

However, their function is to promote evacuation of the bowel to relieve constipation.

Thank you very much for your detail answer sir. is it habit forming? if a person uses all the 3 types in his life time then what next? those 3 things may not work if they are used for long time. then how to handle situation in later stage of life?

Hi,
Anonymous is it habit forming?
Anything which is taken for long time becomes habit-forming. Hence, the patient needs to take fibre-rich diet like plenty of leafy vegetables, and fruits.

Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?
laxatives are stool softeners which ease defecation while cathartics accelerate defecation by increasing bowel movements
