    Letter of Motivation

    Dear Sirs,

With this letter I would like to show my interest for the International Bachelor Economics & Business Economics programme at the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

On the 5th of August 1987, I, ----- Ayubi was born in Curaçao, Netherlands Antilles. I’m of Lebanese, Dutch, Aruban, and Curaçaoan descendancy. Being raised bilingually and in a multicultural environment gave me the privilege to speak, besides my native language Papiamentu, also Dutch, English, Spanish and a little French. In Curaçao the majority of schools operate according to the Dutch education system. After primary school I went to Havo, followed by a two year in one VWO programme at the Abel Tasman College. At this school they concentrate on planning, performing, and discipline. Not happy with my English score at VWO, I decided to do an English course in Boston, Massachusetts. It was a short, but intensive course in which I got the chance to meet people with different nationalities and cultures. In that short period of time I had to do several projects and also give short English classes to foreigners. Not only did I receive my TEFL certificate, but I also learned from the different cultures and customs represented by students attending the English course, and also how essential planning is in a city as Boston. Back in Curaçao, I worked for some time in a middle-large import and distribution company of fine liquors as a part-time cashier and did also some administrative work.

Since my childhood I’ve been traveling around the world. My usual vacation destinations were the Netherlands and the United States, but besides some neighbor islands, I also got the opportunity to visit other countries such as, Venezuela, Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and some countries in Europe. I must say I was always very fond of traveling especially when it was for business purposes of my parents. Experiencing and hearing about the successful businesses my grandparents and parents have run, such as restaurants, boutiques, bakery shops and a hotel, my ambitions for business had started to flourish. Already since my secondary school education I was convinced I made the right choice with respect to the profile Economy & Society having in mind a future career in business affairs.

My interest in the IBEB programme at the Erasmus University Rotterdam has much to do with the information I acquired about its excellent interdisciplinary program and some great references about the University from my former secondary school teachers and friends studying at the Erasmus University. I’m well aware that the key to a successful economy is one open to the influences of globalization. My aim is to work in an international field related to economical and business affairs, somehow contributing to stabilize and boost some economical aspects of Curaçao such as tourism, harbour activities, banking and offshore business, and I’m convinced that the IBEB programme would provide me with the necessary theoretical knowledge and practical skills I need for a successful business management in the future. The highly qualified lectures, the modern teaching methods and the academic environment at Erasmus University will motivate and enable me to achieve my goals.

I realize the highly competitive demands of the program, but I have enough ability, ambition and motivation to cope with the requirements for a successful study at the University. I’m well informed of the seriousness of the heavy loaded IBEB Bachelor’s curriculum for the first two academic years, but I’m prepared to comply with this study curriculum which I found extremely interesting. Adaptation and integration in the Dutch culture and life style should not be a problem, since I’m already familiar with this. To add on I enjoy teamwork and group discussions. Other than that I like to dance, swim, play board games, go to the gym, cooking, fine dining and of course shopping. I may say of myself that I’m a relaxed person, but at the same time serious and passionate about matters I would like to achieve.

As well as my mother who’s a lawyer, my brother who’s a law student at the Radboud University Nijmegen, and my father who’s an anthropologist, I also am determent to realize my professional aims and dreams. Therefore I would be very proud and happy if I were allowed to enrol for the IBEB programme at your prestigious University of worldwide reputation, so that I could prove you and myself of my motivation to fulfill my goals.

I thank you for considering my application and I look forward to your response.
