There is a common English word that is nine letters long.
Each time you remove a letter from it, it still remains an English word - from nine letters right down to a single letter. What is the original word, and what are the words that it becomes after removing one letter at a time?

Ok ok

-The word means 'very surprising'. 'Alarming' or 'scaring' are similar words.
When somebody guess it I have to ask about it because the word is beautiful but I don't know if it's formal and if I can add it to my vocabulary or not.

-There is no a specific order in removing letters, not from the end or from the beggining.

Some guesses now? [:^)]
Any more clues??? First and/or last letters of the word
