School Crossing Guard, today in this area, is a paid position. Here are the requirements: http://www.seminolesheriff.org/en-us/about/employment opportunities/jobs/school crossing guard.php?sf ses=vfflvrrkc or

Applicant must be 18 years of age. Does that mean 18 or more years of age?

It must be the minimum age because the School Crossing Guards that I see around seem to be all of retirement age.

Our registration documents have a tear-off section that the seller sends to the authorities, which in effect de-registers the car.

The same is true in Virginia, USA. It includes an option for "sold for junk", which I have used a couple of times.

In my grade school, the position was held by a "traffic boy". Traffic boys were students, and got to wear ... of honor and trust and given out to the teacher's pets. Naturally, I was never appointed to this high office.

Same here, except that we were also issued black-on-orange flags that said "SLOW", which we could wave at the drivers. We were generally ignored.

How common in different parts of the world is the ... accumulates a fortune in fines that will never be paid?

You are the Bellman, AICMFP.

(Sorry about the multiple posting. Motzarella has been playing up today.)
In 2005 the worst parking offender in Stockhom had 1,477 parking offences for the 134 vehicles registered in his name. His outstanding debt for unpaid fines was 1,633,425 kronor.

The Swedish word for a person who acts as a front like this means literally "goalkeeper".

One council's School Crossing Patrol Job Description: http://www.nelincs.gov.uk/transportstreets/cycling/scpjobdescription.htm

Oh dear. "The postholder must have the ability to work on their own initiative and have the ability to timekeep." To timekeep? How about: must be on time for work.

This isn't just normal job-description gobblydegook. It's actually wrong. Someone with the "ability to timekeep" should be employed with a clipboard and a stopwatch.

I don't think so - the term "a good timekeeper" is fairly normal jargon for "isn't late for shifts".

Not sure about that. Does a crossing guard issue fines to drivers for breaking parking regulations?

No. A crossing guard is usually a parent or staff member of a school standing out in the street by ... but anymore it seems to be adults. They have no official capacity. OTOH, this likely varies from stat to state.

Not, then a Traffic Warden, who in the UK is a uniformed official who hands out tickets for parking infringements. Widely held to be a very unpoplular profession, but I've generally found them easy going and helpful.
However, Salisbury City Council's decision to rename them 'ambassadors' is pushing a point.

I beg to differ: some of the meter maids I've seen were anything but sexless.

Did they charge by the hour?

Show me a hero and I'll write you a tragedy.

Not quite the same, but when you sell your old ... and I would sign over the title to him there.

Our registration documents have a tear-off section that the seller sends to the authorities, which in effect de-registers the car. ... he gets done for driving an unregistered vehicle (that is, it's not considered as "still registered" to the previous owner).

That is the same in California. When I lived in Florida and sold a vehicle there, I sent a similar form (Notice of Sale, HSMV form 82050) to the to Florida DMV. Then again, many people in Florida might not know about this form.
