And we were like in the middle of a shower, it was nice and hot because our fire's been going for a while, but all the water ran out because we'd didn't pump enough.

MARY GEARIN: Nearly 2 weeks later the adventure is over. The students return to school weary , a little smelly, and their opinions divided .

STUDENT: Like we had to get up really early and everything, got dirty and like the activities are really tiring and stuff.

Hi,

What is the meaning of like in those sentences, please?and when do we use it in speech if it is common? Many young people constantly use 'like' in their speech patterns. It fills a pause while they think, it makes their speech less decisive and thus more polite in a sense, and most of all it's just a habit. Like, that movie was, like, great, like, you know what I'm, like, saying? Please, please, don't do this.

because we'd didn't pump.........what is `d here?what kind of grammer is it?is it the same with` because we hadn't pumped enough? It means they had to obtain the water by operating a water pump. TThe grammar is just simple past tense, in a subordinate clause.

Clive, for the first time since I starting coming here, I find myself in disagreement with you. Perhaps you hadn't had your morning coffee and missed that extra 'd, but I find "we'd didn't pump" is a bizarre, non-standard consturction, and not simple past. "We didn't pump" or "We hadn't pumped" but not "We had did not pump" is just wrong. Like, ya know? Emotion: smile
Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?

Hi GG,

Perhaps you hadn't had your morning coffee and missed that extra 'd

You're right, I didn't notice it. I just automatically read it the way I know it should be.

Thank you for the correction. It's nice to know that people care enough to keep an eye on these things!

Best wishes, Clive
