Hi,

What's the difference between "located on" and "located at"?

I suggest you look more at 'in' and 'at'. Here are a few examples.

My home is located at 25 Orchard Street (because it's a precise location)

My home is located in Tokyo. (Because my home is part of a larger whole)

Mountain X is located in State Y. (Because the mountain is a part of a larger whole)

My home is located on an island ( 'On' is used less frequently with 'location', in special cases like an island. It often has the sense of 'on top of')

My home is located on a hill.

Best wishes,

Clive

Hi Clive,

Thanks for the reply. I think I've gotten a sense of these locate in/on/at thing, but it still doesn't seem to fit my encountered question.

If you really want to know, my question is as follows:

"Arlington National Cemetery, the site of the Tomb of the Unknowns, is located on the former Custis estate in Virginia." ......... it sounds sooo awkward though....Emotion: stick out tongue

<This, by the way, is a multiple choice question that I come across, and my answer for this is:

"Arlington National Cemetery, being the site of the Tomb of the Unknowns, has been located at the Custis estate in Virginia." ...... and it's wrong!!.....Emotion: crying>

Hi Simpicitie,

is located on the former Custis estate does sound correct and normal. It sounds like it could be on top of the whole former estate, which is not there any more because it is said to be 'former'.

located at the Custis estate ..( I assume you meant to say 'former'?) This sounds acceptable, but less so. Your tense has been located is also not good, just say is located.

So I'd consider the first above to be the correct answer in this case. It doesn't sound awkward to me at all.

Best wishes,

Clive
Thanks, now I get it.
