Love... I don't think it can be defined. It's way too multifaceted and complicated to just attach a label to.

As a Chemistry freak, I often end up saying, "There's a lot of love in the equation, but in what allotrope?"

For me, that says it all... especially when I'm confused as to whether I just love someone, or am "in love" with them. Emotion: wink

And right now, I'm single, and happily so. I do wish I had someone to love and be loved by, but I'd much rather wait a while than end up with the wrong person in haste.

Take care, all! And Merve.. love will come your way. It's like a butterfly - it'll come settle softly on your shoulder just when you least expect it! Emotion: smile

Cheers,

- Joy

It depends on what you are considering love? Are you referring to the act of love, the physical properties such as a persons attraction to you, or you to them, the ensuing courtship of soothing words and well placed touches of skin on skin which release hormones into the air. All animals emit hormones, some are subtle and imperceptable to our senses, others are not, ever smelled a cat or dog in heat? OR were you referring to the experience of feeling loved, a sense of overwhelming joy or calm when in anothers presence, or at the thought of them with you. Here is an example for you to try. Cut a lemon in half. Take a deep inhale of its scent and let it linger in your nose, taste it, feel its texture in your mouth and on your tongue. Then a week later find a quiet place and concentrate on remembering exactly what you did. I will guarantee that you will remember the smell, taste, and texture so intensely that you would swear there was a cut ripe lemon in your presence. All of this is a result of chemical reactions in your mind, and body to help you identify and remember the lemon and the experience you had with it.

But I digress, it is also more than just chemicals, its also the experience that goes with them. If a severely abused child, that was beaten and molested on a daily basis is asked what love is, it will be a painful experience full of hatred and anger, sometimes it can be reprogrammed to be a pleasant experince to some extent by a professional, but not always. But here is that same idea with the lemon, but with a twist (no pun intended). Take the lemon and place it on a fresh cut or put a single drop of its juice near your eye. It will also cause an experience, albeit a very unpleasant one. You will be able to remember the sting of its juice on your cut, or in your eye for an equal amount of time as the pleasant experience.

Pain and pleasure are all different intensities of the same emotion. Thats why some people can take pleasure in pain itself and vice versa. All of the things that people define love as are just pleasant emotions towards another. Safety, joy, calmness of being, togetherness, comraderie, sense of purpose, sense of self, sense of worth. This is also why love can sometimes be so fleeting. If the other person does not feel the same towards you, or if after time that persons feeling de-intensify and fade away, then one of you or both , will find reason to separate yourselves from the other. The chemicals and emotions are still inside of both of you, they are just not directed at that person anymore. Its all about the focus of your senses. A person can choose to focus their emotions or senses, on any given thing, or group of things and feel a bond. This is just the nature of animals in general.
