What is the meaning of breaking long enough in the following text?

They crawled into the rear seat of Flory's 1939 Lincoln, still talking, with Flory breaking long enough to tell Joel he was driving.

Flory broke away from his conversation with some unnamed person or persons not including Joel in order to inform Joel that he wanted Joel to drive the car, and then Flory immediately resumed his conversation with the unnamed.

Thanks for the reply.
