Hi

Can you tell me how I can interpret this?

"The problem is really perilous, but we live in denial believing that such sins are not the norm in our culture."

Context: Article about girl child abuse.

Hi,

'The problem is really perilous' is unnatural. I think the writer means 'really serious'.

I don't know why he says 'but'.

Does that help?

Hi,

"...that such sins are not the norm in our culture"

Please tell me whether this expression is common. Yes, X is the norm in Y is not unusual.

If it is what does it mean? Please explain it in a sentence of your own.

Consider these simple examples.
