Medical research data should include pure statistics (numbers) and observations.

So there should be pages after pages of data for the research.

Your sentence means the huge amount of data is looked over and check carefully without omitting any details (line by line).

The message the sentence sends out is that the data is trustworthy and there shouldn't be any mistakes. (you can rely on the data without worries)

vsraoHere, data is plural.
It's almost never plural in modern American English. The older singular datum, from Latin, has all but dropped out of the language, and data, the Latin plural, has taken over as a singular within the last 50 years or so. There is no datas, however. Emotion: smile

Hi,

In addition, if you decide that you really want to use a plural verb, you also need to say 'these data' instead of 'this data'.

eg this site that relates to the US Census Bureau. http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/rankings.html

The 2011 Statistical Abstract: State Rankings

These data correspond to data published in the 2010 Statistical Abstract.

Thanks all sirs. this is the reason we are getting confused in preparing medical reports for american companies. lot of differences are there in english and medical english. Not only this but in understanding different accents within America. Atlantic coast doctors accent is easy to catch but difficult to catch mountain region accent and central region accent. I am taking MT course here and experienced teachers also finding difficult to anwer some questions on medical english. that is what the reason i am asking questions here. thanks for your help.

Dear Clive,
Cliveyou also need to say 'these data' instead of 'this data'.
Thanks for the correction.

Can I write "This data", if the entire report is in the form of a book?

Regards,

Sri
Respected Mr. CJ,

Well thank you very much for the update information. We are still using data as plural form in India. However, the singular form datum is not in use.

Thank you very much for your comment.

With high regards,

Sri

My suggestion is:

The medical research data were checked thoroughly line by line ( May ba a comma is necessary after the word 'thoroughly'). Let us see the responses from the senior teacher.
