I have a feeling that medium-sized was originally the correct form and that 'd' has dropped by usage. The same with king-size and queen-size beds, which probably never had the 'd', because of their relatively recent appearance on the scene.

3-room apartment and 3-roomed apartment are both correct.
What I don't understand is why '3-roomed' apartment is correct since there is no such word as 'roomed'.
The answer is that it depends on what you are describing. When describing nouns, we use -ed, or the simple past tense of the verb. Some examples would be, half-hearted attempt, never-kissed princess, never-known secrets, twice-risen dough, or oft-spoken verse.

This shows that you should use "medium-sized," rather than "medium-size." You want to describe the quality of the whole noun as medium-sized rather than only describe its size as medium. Medium-sized eggs as opposed to eggs of a medium size. In the first usage, we are describing the eggs. In the second, we are describing the size.

Any help?
Typically you would use medium size in this manner: "He was of medium size."

You would use medium sized in this manner: "I want a medium-sized Coke."
Perfect. When you want to describe specifficaly the size, so no "d's" !
Wonderful clarification! Thank you!
