Dear Sir OR Madam

I am writing in support of my application the Master by Research in ***.

I graduated in March 199X from *** University with a degree in computer engineering. During my studies at the university, I had the opportunity to study in a course devoted to natural language processing. It greatly influenced my deepest interest to human-computer interface using speech. My final year undergraduate project concerns computer aided instruction (CAI) for people with visual disability in particularly the blind to learn Thai. The system is a simple text-to-speech system which consists of text processing and speech synthesis module. In text processing, the text was required to be segmented because the Thai language does not break up words with spaces. The speech synthesis module used waveform concatenation technique based on syllable units.

After graduation, I took-up a position as a full-time research assistant in *** research laboratory, *** University. My major responsibility is about CAI for people with visual disability which is an improvement of my undergraduate project. The research aim is to improve upon the quality and performance of the former system in text processing, speech synthesizing and also the user interface. The research received grant from *** University Research and Development Institute (XURD), and also got research MMM award by XURDI in 1997. In addition, my research achievement also includes machine transliteration which was applied to information retrieval system. The system is automatically converts Thai transliteration into their original English word. My submission was published in the proceeding of international conference on circuit and systems in 1998

During my term as a research assistant, my main research interest lied in interesting in Speech Recognition. I believe that Speech Recognition is essential for a successful human interface using speech. I took-up the position of full time lecturer in EEE University for 3 years in 2002. Due to my teaching and administration responsibilities, I have not been able to continue my research as I would have personally liked to
However, I was keen to study background theory, techniques and characteristics of Thai speech on my own private study.

In the early of 2004, I joined NNNN research laboratory. My first tasks involved being a head of a project to develop speaker-independent speech recognition system for Thai connected digit. This research was published in the 10th International Conference in Speech and *** in September, 2004. The system did not attain satisfactory accuracy rate, so I have worked on improving the system by incorporating phonetic information vowels and tones. Despite my efforts, I feel that the project does not progress as well as it could be. I would like to use research opportunity as MMM research student to fulfill my research ambition

Having carefully reviewed in course descriptions from MMM, I feel that this master programme is the most suitable for me because of its excellent of structured curriculum and research-oriented. Core courses provide the good fundamental subjects and also prolong my knowledge such as in mathematic, signal processing, communications, stochastic processes, information theory. Concentration courses are also attract my with superior specific application subjects for instant in the speech processing, modern communication and computer network. All subjects will be useful for me in the future to be high quality researcher and teacher. Moreover, I believe that development of research skills from your programme will be gainful my research ability. If I was chosen from your programmed, I intend to follow this up with a Ph.D. after I earn Master Degree, and later, a career in research and teaching.

With my extensive (research) background and determination to succeed, I will be able to contribute to this program and erect to new knowledge as well as develop cutting edge technology. Even though my English language still be not perfect, I have attempted to study improve my English. I took IELTS examination and got modest score, which is 5.5, so I have studied more for English, and I will take TOEFL examination in the early of March, 2005. The TOEFL score will be supplemented later. For other languages that I studied are French which spent 6 months course and Spanish which have spent 2 months course. Finally, I believe that the excellence of your program together with my abilities and motivation, will be provide invaluable experiences and skills that will allow me t o fulfill my goals.

Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response.

Sincerely yours,
A. D.
I don't have time just yet but bumping you up so you are not left out.

I am writing in support of my application for the Master of Research in ***.

I graduated in March 199X from *** University with a degree in computer engineering. During my program, I had the opportunity to study in a course devoted to natural language processing, which has interested me in speech-assisted human-computer interfacing. My final year undergraduate project concerned computer-aided instruction (CAI) in the Thai language for people with visual disabilities. After graduation, I took up a position as a full-time research assistant in *** research laboratory, *** University. My major responsibility involves CAI for people with visual disabilities, which is an extension of my undergraduate project. The research aim is to improve upon the quality and performance of the former system in text processing, speech synthesizing and the user interface. Our research achievement also includes the machine transliteration which was applied to the information retrieval system. The system automatically converts Thai into English. My submission was published in the Proceedings of the International Conference on Circuits and Systems in 1998. Having carefully reviewed your course descriptions, I feel that this master's programme is the most suitable for me, because of its structured, research-oriented curriculum. With my strong research background and determination to succeed, I hope that I will be able to contribute new knowledge to this program as well as help develop cutting edge technology. My English is still not perfect; my IELTS score was 5.5. I am continuing to study the language and will take the TOEFL in early March, 2005. I have also briefly studied French and Spanish.

Thank you very much for considering my request. I look forward to your positive response.
