Hello everybody,

Today I have a few questions/doubts that I find difficult to solve.

1) Someone has written (he is speaking about a sports competition). "He went to enrol". It doesn´t sound correct to me. Should he say "He went to enrol himself"? A similar situation when another person wrote"He prepared to run".

2) See this sentence "...And if you want we can go to see her" (taking about going to visit her mother) I would have said "....we can go and see her". But is the first version correct anyway?

3) Is is ok to say "The competition was 10 kms long?" Of course it sounds much better to say "It was a 10kms competition". But is the first one wrong?

4) Someone said "Early tomorrow morning....." It didn´t sound correct to me, but is it?

5) Talking about tortoises. Someone wanted to say that the pet he had ever had are the tortoises. How would you express that? Would you say "Tortoises are the only pet I have ever had?" or I have had in my entire life?

6) Also about tortoises.... "We can help them by adapting......., by not killing them.... by....." Should we use by in these cases?

7) And the last one !!!! Money is important for? to? people.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

1) Someone has written (he is speaking about a sports competition). "He went to enrol". It doesn´t sound correct to me. It's fine.

Should he say "He went to enrol himself"? It's not wrong to use the reflexive pronoun, but it's not necessary in these examples.

A similar situation when another person wrote"He prepared to run". Also fine.

2) See this sentence "...And if you want we can go to see her" (taking about going to visit her mother) I would have said "..we can go and see her". But is the first version correct anyway? Both are OK. 'To' is more precise.

3) Is is ok to say "The competition was 10 kms long?" Of course it sounds much better to say "It was a 10kms competition". But is the first one wrong? The word 'competition' does not fit well here. The word 'race' is usually used. You can say these things.

The race was 10 kilometres.

It was a 10-kilometre race.

The race course was 10 kilometres long.

4) Someone said "Early tomorrow morning....." It didn´t sound correct to me, but is it? It's OK

5) Talking about tortoises. Someone wanted to say that the pet only pets he had ever had are the tortoises. How would you express that? Would you say "Tortoises are the only pets I have ever had?" or I have had in my entire life?

"Tortoises are the only pets I have ever had."

"Tortoises are the only pets I have ever had in my entire life."

"Tortoises are the only pets I have had in my entire life."

6) Also about tortoises.. "We can help them by adapting.., by not killing them.. by.." Should we use by in these cases? Yes.

7) And the last one !! Money is important for? to? people.

Both are OK

Best wishes, Clive

1) The original is correct.

2) But is the first version correct anyway?-- Yes

3) It sounds odd, especially if it is not a race.

4) It is fine.

5) Tortoises are the only pet I have ever had.

6) Neither makes much sense as they stand; please supply context.

7) Money is important for (= it really is)/ to (= they think so) people.
Thank you Mister Micawber too !!!!

I will provide you with context related to number 6.

He is speaking about tortoises. Why they are becoming extinct. How to help them. He says "We can help them by adopting them from a Pets´shop, by not killing them for money or for fun, by not killing their desert habitants....."

I was wondering if we should use "by".... Couldn´t we say "I can help them adopting....., not killing....etc...

Number 7 is very clear. Thanks!
Yes, 'by' is necessary, at least at first:

We can help them by adopting them from pet shops, (by) not killing them for money or for fun, (by) not destroying their desert habitat....
