My grandfather was a Mason. The Masons is a men's social society dating back hundreds of years. It is particularly associated with Scotland (my grandfather's heritage). Originally, I believe it was for stonemasons (men who cut and dressed stone for building), but expanded to other crafts. It is similar to the medieval guild - workmen who formed exclusive organizations.
There are 32 degrees in Freemasonry the first three are in the blue losfe,, or the local lodge entered apprentice, follow ceadt and Master Mason. The other degrees are through either the Scottish Rite or the York Rite. There is a 33rd degree that is reserved usually doe past Masters as an honorary degree. But everyone 3rd degree and above are all Master Masons. The degree all represent another level of knowledge and each are taught by allegory . The 9th degree is a lesson in administration ofjustice. That's all I can say without divulging secrets
