Young Robin: Father, may I?
Father: Robin...
Young Robin: I want to make the shot.
Father: And you will, but not because of the bow. The bow is dangerous?

You're not ready.

Hi

Father: And you will, but not because of the bow. - you will succeed in making the shot - it will not be thanks to the bow that you will succeed.

It is followed by 'You're not ready' - so I think Father is saying - you will be a good shot - your success will not depend on any particular bow (in other words you will be a 'crack shot' with any bow' - but at the moment you are still not ready / still have things to learn.

Thank you, optilang!
I find it hard to understand what is meant by this remark.

When I first read it I thought "the bow" meant "the bow as a weapon, in general"; in other words, he's saying Robin will, in a figurative way "make the shot" (i.e. will make his mark, be an important person) but it won't be through the use of the bow and arrow. However, since he actually went on to become an expert archer, I'm not sure if this interpretation makes any sense.

You're not ready.
Madhulk, are you sure "You're not ready" belongs to the comment about the bow? Without that comment it makes perfect sense, with it it makes no sense.

It might help if we knew what Robin is asking permission to do. Is it to literally shoot something with a bow? Is it to attend a competition where bow shooting is one event? Something else?

Or it could just be an example of sloppy script writing.

Yeah, you're right Ray. It's that part that seems to scupper the straightforward meaning and cause puzzlement.

That's a scene from Robin Hood's young years when he was a boy.
And a woman asks him to shoot a flaming arrow in order to lit a Fire wheel.

Yes, right after the woman asks Robin for help he takes his father's bow
and says: Father, may I? I want to make the shot.
After which his father says the proverbial now lines.
