Can I say that the following sentences are more or less the same?
1) Not knowing which course to take, I asked for his advice. = Since I didn’t know which course to take, I asked for his advice.

2) We were watching TV news last night, and then the light went out. = We were watching TV news last night, when the light went out.

Hi,

Can I say that the following sentences are more or less the same?

1) Not knowing which course to take, I asked for his advice. = Since I didn’t know which course to take, I asked for his advice. Yes, more or less.2) We were watching TV news last night, and then the light went out. = We were watching TV news last night, when the light went out. Yes.more or less. But #2 is better grammar. In #1, the present continous followed by 'then' is not a good choice of words.

3) We went to Bangkok, and we enjoyed boat tours there. = We went to Bangkok, where we enjoyed boat tours. Yes, more or less.

Best wishes, Clive
