1. Are both these sentences correct:

a) "After the news that Prince William was going to attend the University of St. Andrews, applications for the University of St. Andrews rocketed, and the institution just didn't admit anybody else because it had no openings available any more."

b)"After the news that Prince William was going to attend the University of St. Andrews, applications for the University of St. Andrews rocketed, and the institution just didn't admit anybody else because they had no spots available any more."

2. In case, both are correct, which sounds best?

Both words seem OK to me, if a bit informal. There is also "slot". I think "place" is the polite term.

It's "St Andrews", "rocket" alone does not get you there in my dialect, and there is no need to repeat the name: "After the news that Prince William was going to attend the University of St Andrews, applications skyrocketed, and the institution just didn't admit anybody else because it had no places available any more."
