Hi,
Can I use "now" with past tenses? (especially the simple past)
In these cases, "now" means something like "this time".

I saw it now! Now I saw it! (This time I succeeded in seeing it, I just saw it)
The browser opened the page now. Now the browser opened the page. (This time the browser managed to open the page)

Thanks.

I often see now with past time reference.

Now that the kids were safe and sound ....
Of course, now can assume the local time of the sentence.

6: at the time referred to <now the trouble began>

Thanks,
I meant something different though. The now I'm considering refers to now, this moment, not a moment in the past.

I saw it now! Now I saw it! (Now means "this time", and has not a past meaning: "I saw it this time!"). I'll show you this example in context:
  • Did you see it? Did you see that shooting star?
  • No...
  • Another one! Did you see it now?
  • No, damn... Ha! Now I saw it!
For The browser opened the page now:
  • The browser can't open this page... Grrr... I've already tried three times.
  • Wait a second, refresh... ok, try again...
  • (Poff! Page opened...) Hey, the browser opened the page now!
Those nows means "this time, on this occasion", and I used them with a past tense. Can I?
hi there,

So you mean that 'now' in the example suggests a moment in the past?

Yes, but you should use the present perfect.
