Is it proper to substitute "sitting in/auditing" for "observing" in the above? Thanks.

"Sitting in" and "observing" are both fine for this situation. To "audit" a class in the U.S. means to attend class regularly, just like a regular student, without having to do the work and without getting credit for the class.

"Sitting in" and "observing" are both fine for this situation. To "audit" a class in the U.S. means to attend class regularly, just like a regular student, without having to do the work and without getting credit for the class.
