Hi

The group operated out of an old mansion up high on a hill, in a central part of Denver where there was "old money".

--- What does "old money" mean here?

Families who have been rich for a long time-- through generations. The opposite is 'nouveau riche'.

This is the area of the old stone homes. The wealthy from Leadville, Central City and other mining communities had homes in an area known as Capitol Hill (for obvious reasons). The famous Molly Brown was one, and hers was called "the house of lions" because of the stone carvings of two lions at the entrance.
