Hi~

I am wondering if "I fell down on the way to the bathroom." sounds ok instead of "while going to the bathroom.

I am wondering when 'on the way to a place' is a better choice than 'while going to a place.'

Thank you in advance.

It sounds very much better.

In American English "go to the bathroom" has the second meaning of "using the toilet". You want to avoid that interpretation by not saying "while going to the bathroom". (For example, it's pretty hard to fall while you are sitting on the toilet.)

Except in the case described above, they are both OK. The following are equivalent:

A very funny thing happened on my way to work this morning.
A very funny thing happened while I was going to work this morning.
