Please check if these terms:once/there was a time/at one time mean the same and interchangeable in these sentences below.

1.Once he was rich, but now he is poor.
2.There was a time when he was rich, but now he is poor.
3.At one time he was rich, but now he is poor.

Generally speaking, they all mean the same.

You might also consider the expression 'Once upon a time'. This is often used when telling stories, particularly to small children.
