There are obvious ways in which the environment determines our activities and thoughts-we build here rather than there because of the greater suitability of the site; the presence of a river forces us to construct a bridge to carry the road across-but we also know that there are other more pervasive ways in which our relation to landscape and environment is indeed one of our own affectivity as much as of our ability to effect.

What does the 'one' in bold refer to?

Does 'our relation to landscape and environment is indeed a relation of our own affectivity' really make sense, Clive?
Students: Are you brave enough to let our tutors analyse your pronunciation?
Hi,

It's not terribly easy to interpet the writer's lne of thought.

Remember that meaning and grammar are not the same thing.

I'd probably have used the word 'relationship'.

Clive
Could you tell me why 'relationship' sounds much better than 'relation'?
Hi,
No. It just does.
Although obviously not to the author..

'Relationship' is a much more common word in such a context.
