Suppose that I am talking to my friend at night. This is what I am going to say to him.

(ex) Someone broke my window last week. For the last five days, I have been examining the broken window and looking for clues as to who did it. This morning, I found a small eraser near the window with a name on it.

My non-native speaking friends think the present perfect "have found" should be used because what you found in the morning and what you said to your friend happened on the same day.

I don't know if they are correct. I think the simple past "found" works better because what you found happened in the morning and what you are saying is happening right now at night.

What is your opinion? Thank you very much for your help.

Correct. You don't want the present perfect. There is too great a time gap between the finding and your telling about it.
