Friends,

Consider these lines:

#1 It had been a while since anyone cared for him.

#2 It had been a while since anyone had cared for him.

#3 It had been a while since anyone saw him.

#4 It had been a while since anyone had seen him.


In the past perfect sense, which variation would be right? Two 'hads' in the same sentence (#2 and #4) sound awkward, which is why I am asking.

We usually just use Simple Past if the sequence of events is clear, so options 1 and 3 are the common forms.
