Hello.
I was doing this exercise and I'd like to be sure about it.

Determine the correct order of the sentences in parentheses and use the past perfect or past perfect progressive to express the event that occurred first.

(My father beat me for the third time / I was afraid to stay there)
After my father beat me for the third time, I had been afraid to stay there.

(I made plans with a friend there for a long time / I left home)
Before I left home, I had been making plans with a friend there for a long time.

(I bought a ticket / I saved money for months)
I had been saving money for months when I bought a ticket.

(I got to Miami / I already spent all my money)
By the time I got to Miami, I had spent all my money.

(I tried not to eat on the trip / I had very little money)
I had tried not to eat on the trip because I had very little money.

What would be the difference between had tried not and hadn't tried to?:

(I tried not to eat on the trip / I had very little money)
I had tried not to eat on the trip because I had very little money.
I hadn't tried to eat on the trip because I had very little money.
Hi,

Let's take a simpler example.

I'm working on my roof.

I try not to fall. Here, the 'not' relates to 'fall'. I'm trying to do a negative thing, ie 'not fall'.

I don't try to fall. Here, the 'not' relates to 'try'. I'm not trying at all.

Best wishes again, Clive
