I took a trip to Thailand to watch the Pattaya Open ladies' tennis tournament. The one-week tournament was badly spoiled by rain. Last year's winner Ana Ivanovic crashed out in the first round and Maria Kirilenko of Russia won the title.

The tournament is played on the private courts of the Dusit Thani hotel, which means that there isn't room for very many spectators. I think the maximum attendance is fewer than a thousand people. A roof has been built to protect the crowd against the sun and consequently the supporting poles may obstruct one's visibility a little. I soon got used to them, though.

Court 1.

Courts 1 and 2 are next to each other. The sexy player in the white skirt and yellow top in the far right is Maria Kirilenko.

Entrance to the hotel grounds.

A view from the top of the stands overlooking the hotel swimming-pool and the Pattaya Bay.
