Is this sentence correct:

a) "Corona virus might be just a flu, but it has already caused more ill and dead people than many people would expect."

b) "Corona virus might be just a flu, but it has already caused more people to become ill and die than many people would expect."

You need b).

In English you can't "cause ill people" or "cause dead people". You need a verb in there. So 'become' works in b).

FYI

Just to tighten up your understanding of this, the coronavirus (one word) is the virus itself; it's what causes the disease; it's not the disease. The disease is called Covid-19.

Also, Covid-19 is not a form of influenza (flu). It's actually related more closely to the common cold because it's caused by a virus that's more like the virus that causes seasonal colds than like the virus that causes flu.
