Hi everyone,
I have just signed and I hope this is the right section to ask for help. I have just encountered this:

"She knew her pigeon was toast and wanted to keep him on the hook."

I have no idea what this should mean.
thanks in advance.

.
She knew her pigeon was toast and wanted to keep him on the hook = She knew that the man whom she was duping was doomed, and she wanted to keep him obliged/committed/involved.

This mixed metaphor is so hilarious I think it must be deliberate. I'd be interested to know what it's from.
