I don't see how that conflicts with what I said. ... idiom at all, I would say they were completely justified.

I'm not trying to pick a fight either, and I'm not sure how I can pick a fight by saying that I don't see how it differs from what I said. Perhaps we differ in what is meant by "an established idiom." I simply mean that if an idiom is generally understood, it's appropriate. Otherwise, it should be avoided.
