This is the personal statement for applying to a university. The personal statement must answer three question: Why I dont have any work experience? Why do I choose WGU? What is my long term goal?

My life journey changed drastically seven years ago when I moved from Vietnam to Kansas, U.S., as an exchange student. At sixteen years old, I was on my own. Learning a new language, adapting to a new culture are a challenge. However, after a year, I graduated from high school with 4.0 GPA and became fluent in English as the result of hard work and perseverance. I then attended East Los Angeles College, California and encountered numerous students majored in nursing. Upon knowing how challenging yet rewarding this profession is, I took interest in becoming a nurse. Even though I was so exhausted with the long clinical hours, I have always felt warm and delighted at the patient’s smiles and comforts. I realized nursing is my passion, my true calling.

After graduated from ELAC, I was ineligible to work in the United States due to residency status. Fortunately, I was able to change my status to permanent resident and was legally allowed to work a year later. By that time, I have been out of the field for more than one year; therefore, I don’t meet the criteria for most new graduate program. Understanding of the importance of being in the field, I enroll in RN refresher course at Santa Ana College and register for Advance Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) course provided by American Heart Association to enhance nursing skills. At the same time, I decide to advance my career with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.

At the same time, I decide to advance my career with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and WGU is my first and foremost choice. With the need for a flexible schedule, WGU offers online program allowing me to fit school with irregular work schedule. Moreover, I gain an inside of WGU support system through enrollment counselor. The consultation and advices from student mentor and subject mentors will lead me to success. My positive impression of the enrollment counselor along with the recommendation from Ms.Gaines, Director of Nursing at ELAC gives me the confidence that WGU is the right choice.

From minimal understanding in English to becoming a register nurse in the States, I believe I have the ability and motivation to succeed in the field of nursing in general and the B.S of nursing at WGU in specific. In long-term, I want to gain experience at an acute facility and pursue a Master degree in nursing, specialized in education. My ultimate goal is to expertise in the field of nursing and gives back to patients and community with knowledge, care, and passion.
