Please answer the following questions about The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho.

Question 1: An alchemist is a person who practices alchemy. So what does the title of the novel signify?

Question 2: I do agree that The Alchemist will be a wonderful novel. But it's too much allegorical. I don't think a common person would be able to understand it. If I'm correct, then how is it possible that it sold so many copies of The Alchemist?

The following questions are about the quotes taken from The Alchemist.

Question 3: "When you aspire for something with passion, all the universe conspires to make it happen..."

If it were up to me then I would have written the above quote as:

When you aspire for something with passion, all the universe conspires to make it not happen....

When we try to achieve something, people try their best to make us failure in our purpose. Most of the time they are jealous of us without a reason. Universe also includes people, so don't you think people should be excluded from the universe in the above quote?

Question 4: "The secret of happiness is to see all the marvels of the world, and never to forget the drops of oil on the spoon." N.B. [The oil mentioned refers to one's obligations in life.]

In what way the drops of oil on the spoon refers to one's obligations in life?

Question 5: "...there is one great truth on this planet: whoever you are, or whatever it is that you do, when you really want something, its because that desire originated in the soul of the universe. It's your mission on earth."

Please explain the above underlined sentences.

Question 6: "Intuition is really a sudden immersion of the soul into the universal current of life."

Please explain the above quote.

Question 7: "Courage is the quality most essential to understanding the Language of the World."

What does Language of the World mean?

Question 8: "The darkest hour of the night came just before dawn."

Please explain the above quote.

Question 9: "One 'dies of thirst just when palm trees have appeared on the horizon.'"

Please explain the above quote.

Hey,

Question2: I guess the Alchemist sold hundred of copies, because its showing a wonderful concept about life in general. I agree that its hard for a commen person to understand, but he gan get the concept that i'm talking about.

Question 3: no, we should not be excluded from the universe. its a realistic novel and you have to accept the concept of life. this is the challenge to deal with those people in order to learn. imagen this quote ( when you aspire for something with passion, all the people conspires to make it not happen) its bad, frustrating and annoying, but you have to deal with it. Its real but hard to accept that people is like shit. i understand your point but at the end we have to deal with it

Nanoo Hey Jackson,

what do you think of my answers, is it wrong according to Neversaynever or what?

Hey Nanoo,

How can I know this? If you have read that novel carefully, then you alone will be able to make an informed judgement about your answers.
